History
SAFE of Harnett County, Inc., is a private, non-profit organization that provides safety and advocacy for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. SAFE incorporated as Rape Crisis Intervention (RCI) in 1987. RCI changed its name to Sexual Assault Family Emergency (SAFE) in 1989, when it began providing services to victims of domestic violence. SAFE’s shelter opened in 1995.
SAFE is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, and is managed day-to-day by agency staff.

Values
We believe that battering is more than physical abuse. It is a pattern of coercive behavior enforced by violence in which all parts of a victim’s life are subject to the batterer’s control. In addition to physical abuse, such coercive behavior includes sexual, emotional, and economic abuse. We believe that domestic violence and sexual assault can only be stopped by working with victims to help promote healing and with perpetrators to promote change (intervention), helping systems work effectively to increase safety for victims and hold perpetrators accountable (advocacy) and creating a community that supports peaceful families and healthy relationships (prevention).
